Pryor Creek or Pryor is a city in and county seat of Mayes County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 8,659 at the 2000 census, compared to 9,539 in the 2010 census.Originally named Coo-Y-Yah, Cherokee for "place of the huckleberries", it was renamed Pryor Creek in 1887 which was the name of the local railroad station, which is turn was named for the nearby creek. Due to confusion in distinguishing handwritten mailing addresses to Pryor Creek and Pond Creek, the U.S. Postal Service name for the city was shortened to Pryor, and both names are in common usage.Pryor is located in northeast Oklahoma at the intersection of US Route 69 and Oklahoma State Highway 20. The stream known as Pryor Creek flows past the west and south sides of the city.According to the&nbsp;United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.5&nbsp;square miles (16.9&nbsp;km²), of which, 6.5&nbsp;square miles (16.8&nbsp;km²) of it is land and 0.04&nbsp;square miles (0.1&nbsp;km²) of it (0.31%) is water.

Owasso

The town is named for&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spavinaw_Creek" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Spavinaw Creek</a>, a stream named by French traders and explorers who travelled here in the 18th century. According to historian Muriel Wright, the French name was a corrupted form of the French word&nbsp;ce'pee&nbsp;(meaning "young growth or shoots of wood"). plus the French adjective&nbsp;vineux&nbsp;(wine colored). This term referred to a description of the color of&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quercus_marilandica" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">black jack</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quercus_stellata" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">post</a>&nbsp;and red oak trees which grow here in springtime.

Spavinaw

Chouteau, originally called Cody's Creek, became a stop on the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missouri%E2%80%93Kansas%E2%80%93Texas_Railroad" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Katy railroad</a>&nbsp;in 1871. It soon became a thriving cattle town.&nbsp;The name was changed to Chouteau after the creek that flows north of town that was named for French fur trader&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auguste_Pierre_Chouteau" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Auguste Pierre Chouteau</a>&nbsp;from the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chouteau" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Chouteau</a>&nbsp;family. Auguste created the first permanent white settlement in present-day&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salina,_Oklahoma" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Salina, Oklahoma</a>.

A small community, named for the grove of locust trees where this battle took place, formed here, in the Cherokee Nation of&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Territory" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Indian Territory</a>. A post office was established here on March 26, 1873. Jim Bryan moved the post office to his store in 1908, after Oklahoma became a state and Mayes County was established. In 1910, Louie Ross bought the Bryan store and moved it to his father's ranch house. The community of Locust Grove soon relocated closer to the store, and soon had a cemetery, a gristmill, two blacksmith shops, and a separate building to house the post office.

Claremore is a city and the county seat of Rogers County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 18,581 at the 2010 census, a 17.1 percent increase from 15,873 at the 2000 census.

For thousands of years&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indigenous_peoples" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">indigenous peoples</a>&nbsp;had lived along the rivers in this area, with varying cultures. By the time of European encounter, the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osage_Nation" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Osage</a>&nbsp;was a major tribe in the area. Their territory started at the Missouri River and extended west, including to parts of present-day Arkansas.

Adair is a town in Mayes County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 790 at the 2010 census, compared to 704 at the 2000 census. Named for two prominent Cherokee brothers, the town was established in 1883. It opened a Cherokee school.

The town's 315 housing units were dispersed at an average density of 70 per square mile (27/km2). The racial and ethnic composition of the population was 72.4% white, 0.1% black or African American, 18.9% Native American, 0.6% reporting some other race and 8.0% reporting two or more races. 3.5% of the population was Hispanic or Latino. There were 272 households, out of which 36.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% were&nbsp;married couples&nbsp;living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.06.

Adair

In 1881, Chelsea began as a stop on the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. A post office was established in November 1882. The community incorporated as a town in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, in 1889. The town was surveyed and platted in 1902. The Bank of Chelsea, the first state bank in Indian Territory, began operation in March 1896.
The town economy has historically rested on farming, ranching and oil production. Important farm products were oats, corn, wheat and pecans. A flour mill built circa 1892 was one of Chelsea's original industries. Chelsea became noted as a shipping point for cattle and hay before statehood in 1907. The Chelsea-Alluwe oil field was discovered southwest of Chelsea in 1889 by the United States Oil and Gas Company.
According to the American Oil &amp; Gas Historical Society, Edward Byrd, whose wife was a Cherokee woman, discovered oil seeps in 1882 southwest Chelsea, which was then part of the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory. He apparently took no action to exploit his discovery until 1887, when he and William B. Linn, a Pennsylvanian, and a group of investors from Kansas organized the United States Oil and Gas Company (USOGC). The company subsequently leased drilling rights from the Cherokee Nation on 100,000 acres (400 km2) of land lying west of Chelsea between the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad and the Verdigris River. USOGC completed its first well in 1890, on Spencer Creek. It was a rudimentary operation, compared to productive sites completed a few years later. The well began producing a half barrel of good-quality crude per day from a depth of only 36 feet (11 m). This was enough for USOGC enthusiasts to claim it was, "... the first oil well in Oklahoma."
Chelsea's claim to the first oil well proved to be untrue. Although USOGC drilled ten other wells on its lease in the next two years, the total production was said to be only 12 barrels, economically insignificant, after which the company ceased operating. The Cherokee Oil and Gas Company then took over the lease. By then, the Cherokee government had limited the size of each lease to 12,000 acres (49 km2). It and other companies later drilled more productive wells which proved economically viable. The whole area became known as the Chelsea-Alluwe Oil Field. Significant production dropped after 1916 and the oil companies stopped work in this field shortly after.

Inola is a town in Rogers County, Oklahoma, United States. It is included in the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,788 at the 2010 census, a 12.5 percent increase from 1,589 at the 2000 census. Inola is a Cherokee word meaning "Black Fox."
